Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

SURZYCIA STOPS 39 IN SHUTOUT OVER NO. 10 TMU

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team extended their win-streak to three-straight games with a 2-0 shutout over the No. 10 nationally ranked TMU Bold on Saturday (Jan. 10) night in Toronto.

First-year goaltender Nick Surzycia turned aside 39 shots to earn his second shutout of the 2025-26 season.

In a tightly contested contest between two heated rivals, the Blues wasted no time to strike first as fourth-year forward Eddie Yan capitalized in the offensive zone with a backhand shot that went top-shelf past Kai Edmonds less than three minutes into the game. Carrying the momentum from Yan's early marker, the Blues went into the first intermission with a 1-0 lead.

In the second period, a TMU squad eager for an equalizer looked to break through. Midway through the frame, TMU got their best chance of the night as Gavin Grunder broke into the offensive zone but was denied by Surzycia's pad as the Etobicoke native sent the puck into the corner to keep any potential rebound out of harms way.

In the third period, the Bold continued to pile on the shots but Surzycia was up to the task as he continued to make save after save to avoid a game-tying goal. Just past the midway point of the period, first-year forward Ryan Evenhuis showed off his edge work and patience as he glid around Edmonds and fired home his fourth goal of the season for an insurance marker.

Surzycia continued his dominant performance in net as the period progressed and the Blues defence did an excellent job at getting in the way of pucks and getting their sticks in passing lanes to stifle TMU's offence and hold the No. 10 ranked team in the country scoreless for the first time this season to claim victory in the Battle of Toronto.

The Blues are back in action on Friday (Jan. 16) night when they travel to London, Ont., to take on the Western Mustangs. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on oua.tv.
