Box Score In their first exhibition game of the 2025-26 season, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team picked up a 6-2 win against the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers on Friday (Sept. 19) night at Varsity Arena.
Fresh from the off-season, the Blues came out flying in their exhibition opener. Both sides pressed for the opening goal until a misplay at the blue line gave the Blues a rare 4-on-0 break. Fifth-year defender Kalie Chan slid a pass across the slot to fourth-year forward Emma Elders, who buried it into a wide-open net.
The Panthers were quick to respond as Renee Chapman capitalized on traffic in front of the goal net to even the score. Undeterred and with just two minutes left in the first, Third-year forward Christina Alexiou snapped a shot over the blocker to send the Blues into the intermission up by one.
In the second period, U of T's penalty kill stood strong to preserve the lead. As the Panthers pushed their shot total to 20 on the night, first-year goaltender Jillian Matthews stood tall. With 39 seconds left in the period, first-year forward Emma Lambert gave the Blues a 3-2 lead. Moments later, first-year forward Petra Klimes broke free on a breakaway, making a nice deke before lifting a shot over UPEI goaltender Sarah Forsythe's shoulder to give Toronto a 4-1 lead going into the third period.
UPEI's Orianna MacNeil cut into the deficit with an early goal in the final 20 minutes of play. The Blues were quick to strike back. Less than a minute later after MacNeil's goal, Lambert slipped the puck under Forsythe's pads to restore their cushion for her second goal of the game. The Blues showed no signs of slowing down, as Elders made it 6-2 with less than one minute remaining in the game to secure the win.
Matthews finished the game with 25 saves.
Toronto is back in action on the road on Saturday (Sept. 20) night against the York Lions. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
