ABDUL HAMID MAKES DEBUT WITH JORDAN NATIONAL TEAM

Making her debut with the Jordan national team, University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball player Thuraya Abdul Hamid donned her country's jersey for the West Asian Basketball Championship (WABA).

Having previously attended training camps with the Jordan national team, this marked the first official appearance for Abdul Hamid. At the FIBA Women's Asia Cup qualification event, held in Jordan from April 15-17, the host team was able to secure an 86-75 victory over Syria before dropping an 88-70 decision to Iran. Contributing greatly in Jordan's win versus Syria, Abdul Hamid finished second in team scoring with 14 points, while adding seven rebounds and two assists in a team-high 36 minutes. In the second game against Iran, she secured six points, five rebounds, and two assists in 29 minutes of action. Jordan required two wins to advance from the WABA qualification tournament to the FIBA Asia Cup, putting on hold for now their ascent.

"It was an honour representing my country and I hope to continue having a part in paving the way for the growth of the women's game in the region," said Abdul Hamid. "Despite the loss to Iran, we'll be eagerly preparing to play the qualifiers again in two years."

A global affairs major at the University of Toronto, Abdul Hamid appeared in 79 OUA regular season contests across four seasons wearing the Blue and White. A powerful presence in the paint, she surpassed 340 career points and 290 rebounds following the conclusion of the 2024-25 campaign. Excelling in the classroom as well, Abdul Hamid was twice named a U SPORTS academic all-Canadian.

"My time with U of T not only advanced my understanding of the game, but it also taught me how to be coachable and how to be a good teammate – things that are invaluable when adapting to international play," added Abdul Hamid.
