Taking place this past Sunday (May 25) prior to the medal games at the 2025 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Stockholm, University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey head coach and Canadian hockey icon Vicky Sunohara received induction into the IIHF Hall of Fame.
One of seven selected for the 2025 induction class, Sunohara was joined by world renowned names such as Henrik Lundqvist, Zdeno Chara, Kim Martin-Hasson, Frans Nielsen, David Vyborny, and Kai Hietaranta. For the University of Toronto Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education alumna, her impact as a Canadian women's hockey legend includes two Olympic gold medals (2002, 2006) and seven world titles.
"It's quite emotional," said the pioneering Sunohara, who has coached with the University of Toronto for 14 years. "Wearing this Canada jersey never gets old. Watching my teammates in great moments and tough moments, it's very special."
Continuing to build on her legacy, Sunohara has also excelled as a coach, helping the Varsity Blues to three OUA McCaw Cup championships (2020, 2023, 2025) and U SPORTS silver and bronze in back-to-back seasons (2024, 2025). In addition, she currently serves as a coach consultant with the Toronto Sceptres of the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) and as head coach with the Canadian U18 women's national team, most recently leading the squad to IIHF gold this past January.
