University of Toronto Varsity Blues swimmers Nathan Thomas and Ben Winterborn both picked up silver medals at the 2025 Speedo Canadian Swimming Open this past weekend in Edmonton.

Named the OUA and U SPORTS rookie of the year during the Blues 2024-25 season, Thomas continued his stellar campaign with a second place finish in the men's 200m breaststroke at the national showcase event, posting a time of 2:15.53. The U of T men's rookie of the year also added a fourth-place result in the 100m breaststroke to round out his weekend at the Edmonton Kinsmen Sports Complex.

Meanwhile, a three-time OUA gold medalist in his first season with the Varsity Blues, Winterborn secured silver in the men's 50m backstroke with a time of 25.85 at the Canadian Swimming Open. A busy competitor all weekend long, he added a fourth-place result in the 100m back and seventh-place finish in the 200m back, while also placing 14th in both the 50m and 100m freestyle events.

Rounding out the Blues representatives, five-time U SPORTS medalist Teagan Vander Leek reached fifth in the women's 50m freestyle, touching the wall in the long course race in 26.30. The freestyle sprint specialist also raced in the B-Final of the 100m freestyle, finishing in 10th place overall.

Looking ahead to the summer competition schedule, swimmers will be aiming to deliver their best for the 2025 Canadian Swimming Trials, scheduled for take place from June 7-12 in Victoria. As well, the 2025 Speedo Canadian Short Course Championships will follow in Sherbrooke, from August 7-10.
