BLUES SWEEP LANCERS TO ADVANCE TO SEMIFINALS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team swept the Windsor Lancers, winning Game 2 of their OUA quarter-final best-of-three series 4-2 on Saturday (Mar. 1) at Varsity Arena, to advance to the OUA semifinals.

After a commanding 5-2 victory in Game 1 of their OUA quarter-final series on Thursday, the Blues looked to close out the Lancers and punch their ticket to the next round. The Lancers struck first though, capitalizing on a 3-on-1 rush that left U of T goaltender Rayce Ramsay with little chance to make a stop. The Blues responded quickly though, as Billy Moskal fired a shot from the point that caught Windsor netminder Nathan Torchia off guard and trickled past the goal line. Moments later, Nicholas Wong continued his playoff heroics by grabbing a lose puck off of an offensive zone faceoff and ripping his second goal of the series past Torchia's glove to give the Blues a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.

The Blues extended their lead to 3-1 early in the second, with OUA points leader Owen Robinson pouncing on a Lancers giveaway in front of their own net and finding a hole through Torchia's pads. The Lancers fought back midway through the period as Dylan Schives cut the deficit to one. Windsor looked to build momentum, but the Blues held firm, reapplying relentless pressure in the final minutes of the frame to preserve their 3-2 advantage heading into the third.

With 20 minutes left to secure the series, both teams ramped up the intensity. The shot count climbed, with Toronto firing 21 on goal, while Windsor countered with 24. The Blues stood tall in all areas of the game to maintain their lead as the clock ticked down. Desperate to force overtime, the Lancers pulled their goalie in the final minutes, but Moskal put the game on ice, burying an empty-netter to seal a 4-2 victory and sending the Blues to the OUA semifinals.

The Blues will face off against the TMU Bold, who swept the Lakehead Thunderwolves in their quarter-final series, in the OUA semifinals. Dates and times for the best-of-three series will be announced shortly.
