The No. 4 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team picked up their sixth straight win as second-year forward Ashley Delahey scored the overtime winner in a 1-0 win over the York Lions on the road in Toronto, Ont. on Friday (Feb. 7) night.
The first 60 minutes of play saw Toronto outshoot York 34-21 in a tight contest between the two OUA East teams. Despite the 0-0 score, both teams had good scoring chances at both ends of the ice. Blues first-year goaltender Lyla McKinnon and Lions goaltender Emma Wedgewood were strong between the pipes to force overtime.
In overtime, the Blues applied heavy pressure in the offensive zone to get high quality scoring chances on Wedgewood until Kalie Chan passed the puck to Delahey, who drove the net and went from her forehand to her backhand around Wedgewood to find the back of the net. Her seventh goal of the season secured the win for U of T.
McKinnon had a strong performance in goal as she made huge saves for the Blues on her way to securing her second shutout of the season, with 23 saves in the victory.
The Blues and Lions will play the second half of their home-and-home series at Varsity Arena on Saturday (Feb. 8) night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. with tickets available at varsityblues.ca/tickets. The game will also be live streamed on oua.tv.
