The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team put up a fierce fight but ultimately fell 52-47 to the Lakehead Thunderwolves in a closely contested game on Friday (Feb. 8) night.
From the opening tip, both teams showcased defensive intensity, meaning offensive production would come at a premium. The Blues tallied nine steals and forced multiple turnovers to keep the game close until the final buzzer.
Leading the way for Toronto was third-year forward Alex Jaglall, who provided a spark off the bench with an OUA career-high 11 points and a game high of nine rebounds in just 18 minutes of action. Jaglall's presence in the paint helped keep the Blues within striking distance throughout the game.
Second-year guard Raya Hafez contributed nine points. Her defensive presence and hustle were evident as she consistently pressured the opposition, which allowed her to contribute four rebounds.
Fourth-year guard Kaylee Williams netted seven points while adding six rebounds, three assists, and three steals in a strong two-way performance. Fifth-year forward Thuraya Abdul Hamid also chipped in seven points of her own and demonstrated efficiency by making three of her five shot attempts.
The Blues had a strong first half, responding well after a Lakehead went on run to open the game. U of T's second quarter play saw them pull ahead in part to their big defensive stops and key baskets from Jaglall and Hafez, giving them a 22-19 lead at halftime.
The third quarter saw Toronto continue their defensive pressure, but the Thunderwolves were able to answer, taking the lead with timely baskets. The Blues trailed by a slim margin heading into the final frame and had chances to take control, but were unable to overtake the Thunderwolves. Lakehead would go on to seal the game with crucial free throws in the closing moments.
Despite the loss the Blues showed determination and effort, particularly on the glass, out-rebounding Lakehead 37-30.
