WEBER'S CAREER-HIGH LEADS BLUES TO FINALE WIN

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team ended their regular season strong with a 77-53 win over the McMaster Marauders on Monday (Feb. 17) afternoon.

The Blues finish the 2024-25 regular season with a 9-13 record, in fourth place in the OUA Central division. They are in a four-way tie with Guelph, Laurier, and Waterloo for the final two playoff spots and await the OUA's confirmation of playoff seeding and scheduling.

The Blues came out blazing in the first half, shooting 40 percent from three compared to the Marauders zero percent. Toronto seized the lead in the first quarter and stretched it to 13 by halftime. While McMaster's offensive was stagnant, the Blues were unselfish with the ball, resulting in 13 crisp assists on 15 field goals in the first half. While McMaster attempted to cut into the deficit, U of T kept this momentum streaming into the second half and pushed their lead to 25 in the fourth. The Blues ultimately assisted on 19 of their 26 field goals, outrebounded the Marauders 33-23, and with consistent effort, claimed the win.

The Blues were led by fourth-year centre Lennart Weber who, in his last regular season game as a Blue, scored an OUA career-high 29 points to go with eight rebounds and three steals, shooting over 65 percent from the field and three. Fourth-year point guard Inaki Alvarez showed off his playmaking abilities by setting a new career high in assists with 15 on the night, with an impressive assist-to-turnover ratio of 5:1. Alvarez also notched three steals and eight points. The two remaining Blues in double-figures were fourth-year forwards Quarry Whyne and Anthony Daudu; Whyne put up twelve points, nine rebounds, two assists, and two steals, with Daudu contributing 16 points, six rebounds, and three blocks.

McMaster was led by Moody Qasim with 12 points and seven rebounds, supported by Mike Demagus with eight points and five rebounds.
