Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

NO. 4 BLUES FALL TO NO. 9 GOLDEN HAWKS ON SENIOR NIGHT

The No. 4 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team fell 4-2 to the No. 9 ranked Laurier Golden Hawks on Thursday (Feb. 13) night at Varsity Arena.

After a pregame ceremony to honour the nine graduates from the 2024-25 Varsity Blues women's hockey team, the Blues struck first off the stick of second-year forward Abby Whitworth. As the offence generated chaos in front of the Golden Hawks net, she retrieved a loose puck and fired it into the back of the net for her second goal of the season.

Laurier was able to tie the game later in the first period as forward Olivia McMillan found the back of the net. With four minutes remaining in the frame, the Hawks picked up their first lead as forward Hayley Szymanowski completed a two-on-one scoring chance, forcing the Blues to look to erase a 2-1 deficit after 20 minutes of play.

Midway through the second period Laurier doubled their lead on Tieneke Gedge's first goal of the season. The Blues kept fighting but found themselves trailing after two periods of play.

In the third period U of T cut the Laurier lead to 3-2 as Aili McKeown banged in a puck in front of the net for her 11th goal of the season. The Blues kept fighting for an equalizer but Laurier was able to regain their two goal lead on a goal by Clara Chisholm. As the third period progressed the Blues got some marvelous scoring chances while Lyla McKinnon made some of the best of her 23 saves in the game at the other end of the ice, but despite their best efforts they were unable to even the game, falling to Laurier 4-2.

The Blues will close out the 2024-25 OUA regular season on Sunday (Feb. 16) night when they take on the TMU Bold at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto. Puck drop is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. and the game will be live streamed on oua.tv.
