Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team fell 4-3 in overtime to the York Lions on Sunday (Nov. 9) afternoon in Toronto.
The Blues controlled play offensively in the opening frame, generating several high-quality chances and out shooting the Lions 12-4 in the period. Despite controlling play, York capitalized late in the first with back-to-back goals from Owen Gilhula and Mason Svarich to take a 2–0 lead into intermission.
Maintaining composure throughout the game, U of T's persistence paid off in the third period as third-year forward Julian Recine put Toronto on the board early in the frame. Recine struck again midway through the period to die the game at two, finishing off a set-up from fellow third-year forward Brandon Santa Juana. The Lions regained the lead with a goal from Aiden MacIntosh, but Toronto answered back as third-year forward Rylee Hlusiak buried the equalizer as Recine notched his third point of the game with an assist.
The Blues generated several dangerous looks in overtime, but Lions goaltender Dawson Smith turned them aside to keep York alive. The overtime winner came when Harry Clark broke free on a rush and found the back of the net.
First-year goaltender Nick Surzycia made 24 saves.
The Blues return home to Varsity Arena on Friday (Nov. 14) to take on the Guelph Gryphons. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m., with tickets available at varsityblues.ca/tickets. The game will also be streamed live on oua.tv.
