Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

TORONTO WINS IN DOMINANT FASHION OVER YORK

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's basketball team visited the York Lions on Friday night (Nov 14), capturing a dominant 92-78 win.

Even though the Blues started strong in the first quarter, they proceeded to shoot the leather off the ball in the second — shooting over 68 percent from the field and a perfect 100 percent from three. While shooting lowered in the third – just under 40 per cent – the Blues lockdown defence forced the Lions into bad shots and turnovers. Despite their best efforts in the fourth quarter, York could not penetrate the large 30-point deficit, and Toronto sailed away with the victory.

As a team, the Blues now rank in the OUA Top 10 in a number of offensive categories including overall field goal percentage (41.1), made three-pointers (60), and offensive rebounds per game (11.9). Additionally, U of T have shown themselves to be a staunch defensive team ranking in the Top 6 in opponent three-point percentage (29.8) and opponent turnovers per game (15.4).

All Blues contributed in the win with five different players reaching double-digit points. Third-year forward Simeon Jeffers notched 21 points on over 60 percent shooting in a team-high 34 minutes. Second-year centre Panashe Dumbu was impressive in the paint finishing with 16 points and six rebounds. First-year guard Mikey Ballout added another four three-point field goals to his conference leading total, while fourth-year centre 'Nigel Hylton and fourth-year forward Ryan Rudnick each tallied 13 points in the win.

For the Lions, Jerimiah Kwarteng recorded a game-high 24 points in just 22 minutes.

Up next, the Blues host the Guelph Gryphons at home on Saturday (Nov 15) night with tip-off set for 8 p.m. Tickets will be available to purchase at varsityblues.ca/tickets, with the game available to stream on oua.tv.
