The No. 5 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team defeated the Carleton Ravens 2-1 on Saturday (Oct. 25) afternoon at Varsity Arena.
The Blues dominated both offensively and defensively through the opening 20 minutes, firing 19 shots on net while allowing just five on goal.
Â
The second period saw Carleton strike first as Hayden Serniuk buried a loose puck in front. Twenty seconds later, U of T answered back.Second-year forward Jasmine Comeau threaded a pass into the crease and third-year forward Christina Alexiou tipped it through Carleton netminder Kaitlyn Langille's five-hole. After a back-and-forth stretch through the remainder of the frame, the Blues pulled ahead. Third-year forward Abby Whitworth picked up the puck in the slot and weaved around Carleton's defence before firing a shot past Langille's glove to take the lead.
Â
The final 20 minutes of play were a relatively back-and-forth battle between both teams. Carleton pulled their goalie however, Toronto's defence stood tall and first-year goaltender Jillian Matthews stood tall until the final buzzer.
Â
Matthews made 22 saves in her first OUA win.
