The No. 3 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's soccer team punched their ticket to the OUA gold medal match and 2025 U SPORTS men's soccer championship with a 2-0 win over the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday (Oct. 25) night at Varsity Stadium.
The Blues will host the No. 2 ranked York Lions on Saturday (Nov. 1) afternoon at Varsity Stadium with OUA gold on the line and have qualified for the U SPORTS championship for the first time since 2016.
"The jobs not finished, we're happy with the result today but we still have next week and nationals ahead," said first-year forward Jordan Grey.
U of T opened the scoring in the 14
th minute as Grey used his size to his advantage, finishing off fourth-year midfielder Russell Stewart's corner kick with a header. On the other end of the pitch, second-year goalkeeper Filip Zendelek came up clutch, denying Waterloo's Matthew Mills on a penalty, sending the Blues into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Waterloo pushed for an equalizer in the second half but Zendelek stood tall between the posts as the Kinesiology student finished the game with eight saves on his way to a clean sheet. U of T continued to get quality scoring chances as the half progressed but the score remained unchanged until the late stages of the match. In the 90
th minute, Grey sealed the win for Toronto with his second goal of the match.
"We've got high motivation," Grey said. "It was a team effort today and I'm happy we got the two goals."
