DELHOMELLE SENDS VARSITY BLUES INTO OUA SEMIFINALS

The No. 9 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's soccer team upset the No. 3 Ottawa Gee-Gees with a 1-0 OUA quarter-final victory at Varsity Stadium on Saturday (Oct. 18) afternoon.

A battle of a premiere offence in the Gee-Gees and a defensive juggernaut in the Blues, the match was able to remain stalemated 0-0 heading into the final five minutes. The Blues fended off a consistent Ottawa attack which included 15 shots, but with a veteran defensive group, U of T limited the Gee-Gees to only three shots on goal.

Then it was fifth-year defender Bryanna Campbell sparking the Blues transition, breaking out across half before being knocked down to draw a free kick opportunity for Toronto. Lining up just outside the 18-yard box, Emilija Lucic sent a dangerous ball across the Ottawa net where Julia Cristovao was able to get a foot on the ball and set up Ines Delhomelle who notched the game-winner.

"It was the best feeling in the world," said Delhomelle of her game-winning effort. "Those last three minutes were so stressful so that final whistle was such a relief. We gave it our all and beat them on our home turf – it just means  everything."

With only a minute remaining following the celebrations the Blues were able to withstand one final push from Ottawa to hear the final whistle and claim the quarter-final win.

Toronto goalkeeper Maria Godoy-Atrash claimed the clean sheet win, making all three saves required of her through the 90-minute effort.

"We have a lot of experience and we are able to stay composed so I think that has allowed us to be really successful this season as a defensive team," said Campbell after the match. "We are good at fighting throughout the entire game, into the 90th minute and even past it. It just makes me so proud of this team and we are just going to continue doing what we have been doing."

With the win, the Blues advance to the OUA semifinal round next Saturday, Oct. 25. They will host at Varsity Stadium the winner of McMaster versus Western scheduled for later tonight.
