The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team fell 6-0 to the Laurier Golden Hawks in Saturday (Oct. 18) night at Varsity Arena.
U of T created chances offensively in the first period outshooting the Golden Hawks 14-9 after 20 minutes of play. Fourth-year forward Zack Smith was effective in causing traffic in front of Laurier's net. Despite the chances for the Blues, Travis Verbeek opened the scoring to give Laurier the 1-0 advantage. Justin O'Donnell's tally doubled Laurier's lead and Bryce Kilbourne capitalized on a short handed opportunity as U of T went into the first intermission trailing 3-0.
In the second period, Bryce Sutherland scored a pair of goals to extend the lead. Outshooting their opponent 16-12 in the middle frame, the Blues created chances at the blueline and hit two posts on a power play opportunity midway through the frame.
In the third period, the Blues threw everything they had towards goaltender Andrew Ness, who ended the game with a 39 save shutout. Midway through the final frame Tyler Hunt added a sixth goal for Laurier. The Blues showed great composure defensively to limit Laurier scoring chances as the game progressed while attempting to get on the scoreboard.
Third-year goalie Jordan Fairle and first-year netminder Nick Surzycia combined for 19 saves for Toronto.
The Blues will travel to Guelph for their next game to face the Gryphons. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on
