WOMEN'S SOCCER EARN SEVENTH CLEAN SHEET OF THE SEASON

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's soccer team recorded a 2-0 clean sheet victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs in Sudbury on Saturday (Oct.11).

In a push for the playoffs, the three points earned lifted Toronto into a three-way tie for second-place in the OUA East standings with an 8-2-1 (W-L-T) record. Five teams in total rank within four points of one another heading into the final games of the regular season.

On the pitch, U of T's ability to maintain possession and deliver strong defensive efforts limited the Voyageurs attack. The effectiveness prevented Laurentian from registering a single shot on goal through the entirety of the match. Serving on the back line for the Blues in the shutout was veteran defenders Cassie Chan, Hannah Chown, Lindsey Barwitzki, Bryanna Campbell, Samantha Gravina, and Devon Eisen.

Keeping action primarily in the Voyageurs end of the pitch, the Blues broke the initial stalemate with the first goal of the game in the 13th minute. After receiving a quick pass from second-year midfielder Maddy Mah, it was Eisen who broke the deadlock with a long-distance effor from beyond the 18-yard box. The goal marked the first for Eisen as a Blue.

Less than five minutes later it was Mah who added an insurance marker for Toronto. Streaking in free on the right wing, Mah was first to get to a long pass from Chown. She then used her left foot to slot the ball past the Laurentian keeper. The goal also marked the first for Mah as a Blue.

Untested throughout the 90 minutes, third-year goalkeeper Juliana Ottoni was awarded the win.

Sitting just one point back of the Nipissing Lakers in first-place, the Blues OUA regular season finale in North Bay on Sunday (Oct.12) will be pivotal in deciding the final standings. Toronto and Nipissing will kick-off at 12 p.m. with the game streamed live on oua.tv.
