Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

VANCE EARNS FIRST SHUTOUT AS BLUES DEFEAT RAVENS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team defeated the Carleton Ravens 3-0 on Saturday (Jan. 18) evening at Varsity Arena.

Second-year goaltender Carlee Vance stood tall in net, making 25 saves to secure her first shutout in the OUA.

Despite the scoreless first period, the Blues pushed for a goal as they generated high quality chances in the offensive zone. On the other end of the ice U of T showcased strong penalty killing to nullify both of Carleton's power play opportunities in the first twenty minutes. Vance made seven saves in the opening frame.

Early in the second period Toronto's special teams came through again, this time with a power play goal to open the scoring. The Blues sustained offensive zone pressure and set a screen in front of Ravens goaltender Kaitlyn Langille, allowing first-year defender Taylor Thompson's shot from the blueline to make its way through traffic and into the back of the net for her second goal of the season. As the period progressed the Blues began to pile shots on the Ravens net, but Thompson's goal stood as the difference maker to give the Blues a 1-0 lead after 40 minutes of play.

In the third period the Blues added to their goal total 10 minutes into the final frame as Emma Elders sped into the offensive zone and fired a shot that beat Langille top shelf on the glove side, doubling the Blues lead. Shortly afterwards, Sophie Grawbarger added an insurance goal for the Blues on the power play with her third goal of the season.

Vance made the best of her 25 saves in the game with 83 seconds left in the game on a penalty shot. The second-year goalie stood tall, sliding across the crease to make a pad save on the Ravens shooter, helping her secure her first shutout in the OUA and a 3-0 win for the Blues.

The Blues are back in action on Saturday (Jan. 25) afternoon as they'll travel to North Bay, Ont., to take on the No. 7 nationally ranked Nipissing Lakers. Puck drop is scheduled for 4 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on oua.tv.
