BLUES SCORE THREE IN THIRD TO COMPLETE COMEBACK AGAINST GOLDEN HAWKS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team won 4-2 against the Laurier Golden Hawks in their Thursday (Jan. 16) evening game at Varsity Arena.

The Blues came into this divisional matchup looking to grab another win to continue their undefeated 2025 play. They came ready to play, dominating the entire period. Toronto outshot Laurier 14-4, with countless opportunities that were only kept out because of Golden Hawks goaltender Tristan Malboeuf. With only five minutes left in the opening frame, Owen Robinson swept a pass across the crease to the stick of Billy Moskal, who tucked the puck into the open net to give Toronto their first goal of the game. The Blues held off the Golden Hawks until the buzzer, ending the period up 1-0.

The second period saw Laurier ramp up their efforts and they were rewarded early. Kai Stothers tied the game by shooting the puck through traffic and into the back of the net. Despite Toronto raising their shot count to 20, they were unable to get any bounces past Malboeuf. With only two minutes left in the middle frame, Laurier grabbed the go-ahead goal as Tyler Davis snuck in a back-door shot.

Despite a challenging second period, the Blues came out stronger than ever in the third. Just two minutes in, Christian Stevens capitalized on a pass from Eddie Yan, firing a blocker-side shot to tie the game. Moments later, Owen Luik passed to Julian Recine on the far side of the offensive zone, who skillfully cut inside and maneuvered around Malboeuf to retake the lead for U of T. The Blues didn't let up, as Dylan Wightman beat the Laurier defence and slipped the puck through Malboeuf's five-hole to extend the lead to two goals with 12 minutes remaining. The Blues faced a 6-on-4 disadvantage in the final minutes when they took a penalty and Laurier pulled their goalie, but the Blues defense stood strong, and they held on for a 4-2 victory.

This win raises Toronto's record to 12-8, and puts them in second place in the OUA Western Conference. Looking ahead, the Blues will have their first away game of the new year on Saturday, Jan. 18 against TMU, with puck drop scheduled for 1:15 p.m. The matchup against their cross-town rivals can be streamed online via oua.tv
