Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

BLUES FALL TO LANCERS ON THE ROAD

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team fell 4-2 to the Windsor Lancers on Saturday (Jan. 11) afternoon in Windsor, Ont.

Less than two minutes into the game U of T found themselves trailing 1-0 as Lancers forward Elissa Benjamin found the back of the net. As the period progressed and the Blues looked to get an equalizer, first-year goaltender Lyla McKinnon was strong between the pipes for the Blues as the Lancers fired shots on the Toronto native while controlling possession in the offensive zone. Windsor extended their lead late in the first period with Maggi DeWolf-Russ finding the back of the net as the Blues exited the ice trailing 2-0 after the first period.

In the second period the Blues showcased a strong performance with two unanswered goals to tie the game up at 2-2. Second-year forward Taylor Delahey got the Blues on the scoreboard, finishing off a pass from behind the net from her twin sister Ashley Delahey for her fifth goal of the season.

Aili McKeown tied the game at 2-2 late in the second period with her team leading ninth goal of the season. The fourth-year kinesiology student fired home a rebound off a shot and past Lancers goaltender Candence Petitclerc as Taylor Delahey and Kalie Chan picked up assists on the goal as the Blues gained momentum, tying the game at 2-2 after two periods of play.

In the third period Windsor regained their lead as Benjamin scored her second goal of the game, putting the Blues down 3-2. As the period progressed U of T looked for an equalizer, but with McKinnon pulled for the extra skater Maggie Peterson gave Windsor a two-goal lead as the Blues dropped Saturday's road contest by a final score of 4-2.

The Blues will return to Varsity Arena on Friday (Jan. 17) night when they host the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. with tickets available at varsityblues.ca/tickets. The game will also be streamed live on oua.tv
