Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team won 5-2 on Saturday (Jan. 11) night against the Brock Badgers at Varsity Arena.
Starting back on home ice for the third time in a row after winning their two last games, the Blues entered the game looking to keep their winning streak alive. With only a minute and thirteen seconds played in the game, Ben Dirven ripped a shot from the top of the circle after receiving a tape-to-tape pass from Owen Hollingsworth, finding the net and putting the Blues up 1-0. However, a penalty for the Blues only a few minutes later gave the Badgers the upper hand, and Zack Stinger capitalized on a rebound to even the score at 1-1. The Blues continued to pressure Brock's goaltender Will Hambley, but in the last minutes of the period Brock slipped a stray puck past U of T goalie Rayce Ramsay to jump ahead. With the clock ticking down in the final seconds of the opening frame, Julian Recine's beat a Brock defenseman to go in on a breakaway. He pulled around the crease and flipped a shot over Hambley's blocker to tie the game with just 1.6 seconds remaining.
Ramsay and Hambley continued to showcase great performances in net with Brock upping their shot count to 26. Ramsay consistently blocked every chance, including a remarkable break-away glove save that kept the Blues in the game. The stalemate remained going into the third.
The last period of play saw Brock raise their shot count to 36, gaining an advantage on a four-minute power play. However, Ramsay continued to stand tall. After a great show of puck possession by Robinson, he found Aiden Reeves at the blue line, who fired a rocket past Hambley to finally break the tie. Then, with hopes of getting back on the board, Brock pulled their goalie to create a 6-on-5 advantage. However, Robinson grabbed the Blues fourth goal with an empty netter. Sealing the deal, Owen Hollingsworth scored Toronto's fifth with a second empty net goal, giving the Blues an easy finish to a Saturday win.
