The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team lost 3-0 to the Concordia Stingers in an exhibition game on Sunday (Sept. 15) afternoon at Varsity Arena.Â
The Blues offence was electric from the moment the puck was dropped. The Blues controlled possession, keeping the puck in the Stingers defensive zone for the majority of the first period and they outshot the Stingers 11-5 in the opening frame. Despite the offensive pressure Toronto was applying, strong performances from Stingers goalie Arianne Leblanc and second-year Blues netminder Carlee Vance kept the game scoreless after 20 minutes of play.Â
Early in the second period Vance made the best of her 17 saves in the game, stretching her pad across the crease to steal a goal from Concordia. As the period progressed Concordia picked up two goals scored by forwards Kristina Shatas and Emilie Lavoie. Â
Despite the two goals, the Blues didn't back down as Vance continued to make big saves while the Blues pushed for a goal and while they went into the third period down 2-0, Toronto's strong play shifted the momentum back in their favour.Â
In the third period U of T kept their foot on the gas pedal as they pushed for a goal, but luck wasn't in their favour as Concordia scored an empty net goal to make it a 3-0 game which ended up being the final score in the matinee.Â
The Blues next game is an exhibition game against the McGill Redbirds at Varsity Arena on Thursday (Sept. 19) night. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and tickets are available at varsityblues.ca/tickets. Â
