The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team picked up a 5-3 win over the TMU Bold in exhibition action on Friday (Sept. 13) night at Varsity Arena.
The Blues were firing on all cylinders from the moment the puck was dropped and midway through the first period the Blues broke the ice when first-year forward Cooper Way found the back of the net to give the Blues the 1-0 lead.
The offence continued to shine in the opening frame as second-year forward Julian Recine found the back of the net to double the Blues lead. U of T added a third goal when the first-year Nathaniel Davis sent a pass to third-year forward Jacob King, who found the back of the net as the Blues went into the first intermission with a 3-0 lead.
In the early stages of the second period, third-year forward Eddie Yan picked up his first goal of the pre-season to give the Blues a 4-0 lead. As the game progressed the Bold got on the board when forward Kevin Gursoy scored to get TMU on the scoresheet but the Blues went into the third period with a 4-1 lead.
In the third period the Bold added a pair of goals with Gursoy getting his second of the game and defender Joseph Ianniello scoring to make it a 4-3 game.
As the third period progressed first-year goaltender Sebastian Resar made some of the best of his 30 saves in the game to keep the Blues up by one goal. TMU pulled their goalie for the extra attacker but fourth-year forward Ben Woodhouse scored on the empty net to secure a 5-3 win for the Blues.
The Blues will be back in action on Friday (Sept. 20) night against the University of New Brunswick Reds at Varsity Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. and tickets are available at varsityblues.ca/tickets.
