BLUES EDGE GRYPHONS IN PRE-SEASON OPENER

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team defeated the Guelph Gryphons 3-2 on Thursday, September 12 at Gryphon Centre Arena.

The Gryphons opened the scoring late in the first period with a goal off the stick of Jacob Winterton. Toronto evened things up with 29 seconds to go in the opening frame as rookie forward Nick Athanasakos scoring in his first game in the Blue and White.

Third-year defenceman and UMass-Lowell transfer Mark Cooper gave the Blues the lead midway through the second frame with a powerplay marker, but the Gryphons evened the score just over four minutes later with a shorthanded goal from Ethan Doyle. The game was tied 2-2 after 40 minutes.

Second-year forward Julian Recine proved to be the hero, notching the game-winning-goal off an assist from rookie forward Cooper Way with less than eight minutes to go in the game.

Third-year netminder Rayce Ramsay made 20 saves in the win.
