Box Score The No. 8 nationally-ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team fell 2-1 in overtime against the Waterloo Warriors in the McCaw Cup Final presented by CCM on Saturday (Mar. 9) night at Varsity Arena.
Â
In front of a packed crowd of 1,481 fans at Varsity Arena the Blues took the ice motivated. Just over seven minutes into the first period, fourth-year forward Juliette Blais-Savoie broke into the offensive zone, giving the puck to second-year forward Emma Elders who sent the puck back to the former.Â
Â
Blais-Savoie fired a shot on net that knuckle-balled its way over Warriors goaltender Mikayla Shnarr and into the back of the net, breaking the ice in the Blues favour.
Â
As the period progressed, fifth-year goaltender Erica Fryer made big saves as the Warriors offence was awakened by the Blues goal. Waterloo's Carly Orth was able to find the back of the net late in the first period sending both teams off the ice tied at one after one period of play.
Â
The second period was scoreless but Fryer stood tall, making some of the best of her 16 stops in the McCaw Cup Final to keep the game tied. Late in the period the Blues penalty kill came up clutch, blocking shots from all directions of a relentless Warriors attack and were able to kill off penalties to keep the game deadlocked at one.
Â
60 minutes of hockey wasn't enough as both goalies continued to stand tall as the McCaw Cup would end up being decided in overtime. Both teams traded chances in the extra frame but the Warriors got the advantage as Orth sent the puck to Paige Rynne who found the back of the net with the game winning goal.Â
Â
The Blues will now switch their focus to the U SPORTS championship in Saskatoon, Sask. Seeding will be announced on Sunday (Mar. 10) and the tournament will begin on Thursday (Mar. 14). Games will be streamed live onÂ
