The No. 8 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team will welcome the Waterloo Warriors to Varsity Arena this Saturday (Mar. 9) for the 2024 OUA McCaw Cup final.
The Blues return to the provincial championship for the fourth time in the last five seasons, including now two consecutive years. U of T will be aiming to claim an impressive 20th OUA title in program history, with the benefit of home ice on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Warriors will be vying for their first McCaw Cup championship in the programs 22-year history. Both the Blues and Warriors have also already booked their tickets to the 2024 GFL U SPORTS Women's Hockey Championship, presented by Connect Energy, scheduled for Mar. 12-17 in Saskatoon, Sask.
Puck drop on Saturday is set for 7 p.m. Tickets are available online at
varsityblues.ca/tickets. The first 500 U of T students to redeem their ticket online will receive free admission.Â
The Blues earned their berth to the McCaw Cup after coming back from a game down versus the No. 3 nationally ranked Guelph Gryphons in the OUA semifinal round. After dropping the opening contest of the best-of-three series last Wednesday at Guelph, U of T rebounded with back-to-back wins on Friday and Sunday. This included an impressive shutout win at Guelph yesterday, with a host of Blues fans in the crowd at the Gryphon Centre for the critical Game 3. The Blues qualified for the OUA playoffs finishing second in the OUA East division with a 19-8-1-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL) regular season record. From there they defeated the Queen's Gaels in the opening round of the postseason, also delivering a come-from-behind effort in the three-game quarter-final series.
On the other side of the bracket, the Warriors made quick work of their Waterloo-based rival Laurier Golden Hawks in the OUA quarter-finals, winning two straight games to propel themselves into the final four. This past week they then went the distance versus the York Lions after a first game upset, rebounding to outscore the underdog Lions 7-1 in Game 2 and Game 3 combined. The Warriors entered the OUA postseason after finishing second in the OUA West division with an 18-7-0-3 (W-L-OTL-SOL) regular season record.
