The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team won 4-0 against the Brock Badgers on Saturday, November 23rd in their game on the road in St. Catharines, Ont.
The opening period between the Varsity Blues and the Brock Badgers was a tightly contested, low-event frame that left both teams searching for the back of the net. Despite a few promising rushes and scattered chances at both ends, neither side managed to break through offensively. The Blues focused on setting the tone with a disciplined forecheck and steady defensive play, limiting the Badgers to shots from the perimeter. Starting in net again for Toronto after a break, Rayce Ramsay had a solid start, turning aside everything that came his way and keeping the score at 0-0.Â
The next 20 minutes saw much of the same even play, however, late in the second half, the Blues finally got on the board. On a penalty kill, a mishap at the blue line of Brock's zone gave Cooper Way a breakaway, and he raised it up and over Samuel Vyletelka's glove and into the net, giving Toronto their sixth shorthanded goal of the season. Just a few minutes later, a 2-on-1 between Owen Hollingsworth and Owen Robinson resulted in the Blues' second goal, as a quick back-and-forth pass between the two beat Brocks's netminder. Overall, the Blues outshot Brock 21-14 and went strongly into the third up by two goals. Â
High off the energy from their second-period play, the Blues went into the third with a lot of grit. Only two minutes after the start of the third, a shot from Julian Recine hit the post and rebounded out onto Dylan Wightman's stick who fired it home and grabbed the third goal of the game for the Blues. Despite the three-goal differential, the Badgers picked up a considerable amount of speed as they fought to grab their first goal of the game, raising their shot count to 22. However, Rayce Ramsay shut down all of Brock's chances. The end of the third saw Brock pull their goalie in an attempt to grab at least a point against the Blues, however, Toronto smothered their chances by grabbing an empty net goal, with Cooper Way putting in a pass from Owen Robinson, finishing the game at 4-0. Â
The Blues will be heading to Montreal on Saturday, November 30 for their last game before the winter break. They will be facing off against the McGill Redbirds with puck drop scheduled at 3:30 p.m. The game will be streamed on oua.tv.
