The No 4 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team fell 3-2 versus the No 6. ranked Guelph Gryphons on Saturday (Nov. 2) afternoon in Guelph, Ont.
Â
U of T opened the scoring with a power play goal less than seven minutes into the first period. Fourth-year captain Emma Potter kept the puck in the offensive zone at the blue-line and passed the puck to second-year forward Taylor Delahey. Delahey then sent the puck down low to twin sister Ashley Delahey, who found the back of the net for her fourth goal of the season, giving the Varsity Blues a 1-0 lead.
Â
The Blues power play stayed hot and gave U of T a two goal advantage as fourth-year forward Aili McKeown picked up her second goal of the season, finding a rebound off of a shot from second-year forward Christina Alexiou.
Â
With less than seven minutes remaining in the second period, Guelph forward Katelyn Dance got the Gryphons on the board to cut into the Varsity Blues lead. Despite the Gryphons goal, the Varsity Blues carried their 2-1 advantage into the second intermission.
Â
Early in the third period Guelph tied the game as forward Maeve Sutherland-Case found the back of the net, before Guelph got another flurry of scoring chances but first-year Blues goaltender Lyla McKinnon came up big between the pipes to keep the game all square at two goals apiece. McKinnon had a strong afternoon in net for Toronto making 28 total saves in the game.
Â
However, Guelph finally took the lead courtesy forward Deija Houston. The Varsity Blues pushed for a tying goal as the third period progressed but as time ticked down, the Blues were unable to get the equalizer.
