The No. 9 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team fell 4-0 to the Queen's Gaels on Friday (Nov. 15) night in Kingston, Ont. Â
The first period saw stellar saves exchanged between first-year Blues goalie Lyla McKinnon and Gaels goaltender Emma Tennant. The Blues penalty kill had a strong performance in the opening frame, getting bodies in front of pucks and sticks in passing lanes to stop the Gaels power play. Late in the first period, Queen's managed to open the scoring as they capitalized on an oddplayer rush as forward Carys Collie found the back of the net to give them a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes of play. Â
With nine minutes left in the second period Queen's added to their lead with forward Mikayla Cranney firing a shot through traffic to make it a 2-0 game. U of T had a strong finish to the second period as they looked to generate offence and cut into the deficit but didn't find the net as they trailed 2-0 after the second period. Â
U of T went down 3-0 in the third period as defender Sarah Campbell found the back of the net after finishing off a cross-crease pass. As the third period progressed McKinnon continued to keep Toronto in the game as the Toronto, Ont., native finished the game with 21 saves. Toronto got high quality scoring chances, including multiple posts throughout the game as they looked for a comeback but weren't able to find the back of the net. Queen's added a fourth goal to their total late in the third period as forward Rebecca Thompson picked up a loose puck in front of the net for the final Gaels goal of the night as the Blues fell 4-0 to Queen's on the road.Â
The Blues return to the ice on Saturday (Nov. 16) night as they travel to Oshawa, Ont., for a road game against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on oua.tv.Â
