Sebastian Resar made 36 saves to guide the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team to a 4-1 win against the Lakehead Thunderwolves in their first regular season game on Friday (Oct. 4th) night in Thunder Bay.
The Varsity Blues opened the first period with an electric start that carried itself through the period. Multiple up-and-down-the-ice battles created countless scoring opportunities for the Blue and White but Lakehead demonstrated strong defensive play. Although facing a couple of penalty kills, first-year goaltender Sebastian Resar displayed his exceptional composure and skill, highlighted by a remarkable breakaway save midway through the first. The team's energy kept the score at 0-0 going into the second.
In the early start of the second, the Blues continued their offensive push but Lakehead managed a lucky bounce from Spencer Blackwell to open the scoring. However, the momentum shifted when second-year Julian Recine struck hard and fast, taking a beautiful shot from the point to put in the first goal for the Blues. Keeping the energy going, the Blues snagged another tally to throw onto the board when, in a perfectly executed play, fourth-year Billy Moskal tipped in a shot from third-year Nicholas Wong. With 10.5 seconds left, first-year Dylan Wightman finished strong by grabbing a third goal for the team, assisted by Moskal and Recine.
The Blues continued to shut the Thunderwolves down throughout the third, keeping the score at a firm 3-1 until the last 5 minutes when third-year Jacob King put in the Blues' fourth goal right off a faceoff, making the game 4-1. At the other end, Sebastian Resar proved tough competition against the Thunderwolves' offence, facing 37 shots.
The Blues will be looking to get a season streak going in their second game on Saturday (Oct. 5th) night against Lakehead University. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
