BLUES FALL TO BADGERS ON THE ROAD

Box Score The No. 4 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team fell 5-1 to the Brock Badgers on Thursday (Oct. 31) night in St. Catharines, Ont.

The Blues found themselves trailing in the first period as Badgers forward Randyll Strongman opened the scoring less than two minutes into the game to give Brock an early 1-0 lead. Despite the early goal U of T was able to gain offensive possession and push for an equalizer. Even with some quality scoring chances from the Blues, Toronto was unable to find the back of the net and trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes of play.

In the second period the Blues got an equalizer as first-year forward Sadie Watkins-Southward fired a shot that was deflected on net by fourth-year forward Katy McKenna that was stopped by Badgers goaltender Kennedy Lonson, but the rebound landed on the stick of fourth-year forward Emma Irwin who found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1 with her second goal of the season.

Brock regained the lead with under three minutes left in the second period as defender Ella Krushelnicki fired a shot from the blueline, beating Vance glove side to give the Badgers a 2-1 lead. The Badgers added to their lead 15 seconds later as defender Allison Moore fired a shot through traffic to give Brock a 3-1 lead that they carried into the second intermission.

After making 14 saves in the game, Vance was relieved by first-year goaltender Lyla McKinnon to start the third period. Brock added two more goals in the third period as defender Sydney Hood picked up her third goal of the season and forward Madison Cronkwright scored her first of the year. The Blues pushed for a comeback in the third period but ended up losing the game 5-1 to the Badgers. McKinnon made 8 saves in the third period.

The Blues are back in action on Saturday (Nov. 2) when they travel to Guelph, Ont., to take on the No. 6 ranked Guelph Gryphons. Puck drop is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on oua.tv.
