The University of Toronto Varsity Blues field hockey team fell to the York Lions 2-1 in a shootout in the OUA Bronze Medal game on Sunday, October 27 at Back Campus Fields.
The Blues opened their final weekend with a 1-0 loss to the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday, resulting in a matchup against their cross-town rivals for bronze.
The Blues and Lions met twice earlier in October, with the Blues winning both games in the home-and-home series 1-0.
Blues captain McKinley Kennedy opened the scoring just four minutes into the game, gathering a rebound from a penalty corner and finding the back of the net to give Toronto an early lead. The Blues maintained pressure throughout the frame with four penalty corners and three shots.
Both teams finished at the top of the standings in the regular season, and their skill was on display throughout the game. Neither team was able to generate a sustained attack, with strong back-and-forth play in the midfield preventing either team from gaining much momentum.
York tied the game at the beginning of the fourth quarter on a goal by Kathryn Carlow, who was able to find the back of the net over the head of Blues goalkeeper Deepi Gill.
The fourth quarter ended in a deadlock, meaning the bronze medalist would be determined via shootout.
The Lions scored on their first three attempts, with Tessa Wang, Carlow, and Abby Thompson scoring, which proved to be enough as the first three Blues shooters were turned aside by York goalkeeper Jade Lew.
The Blues conclude their 2024 OUA season with a fourth-place finish.
