BLUES BEST BADGERS IN HOME OPENER

The No. 5 nationally ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team defeated the Brock Badgers 3-2 on Friday (Oct. 25) night at Varsity Arena.
 
U of T opened the scoring midway through the first period. The offence applied pressure in Brock's end and fourth-year defender Kalie Chan recovered a loose puck and sent it past Brock goaltender Ava Cruikshank to give the Blues a 1-0 lead. Brock responded with a goal of their own in the first period as defender Madelyn Walsh set up defender Sydney Hood, tying the game at 1-1. The Blues were able to quickly respond to Brock's equalizer as second-year forward Taylor Delahey sent a pass in front of the Badgers goal that second-year forward Ashley Delahey put behind Cruikshank to give Toronto a 2-1 lead that they carried into the first intermission.
 
In the final five minutes of the second period Badgers forward Randyll Strongman tied the game and while Toronto pushed for an edge as the period went on, the two teams went off the ice tied 2-2 after two periods of play.
 
In the third period the Blues pushed hard to regain the lead as they outshot Brock 15-8 in the final frame. Fourth-year forward Sophie Grawbarger ended up being the hero for Toronto. After receiving a pass from Taylor Delahey, the Garden River, Ont., native skated in on a breakaway and beat Cruikshank five hole to give the Blues a 3-2 advantage.
 
Toronto played a strong defensive game the rest of the way as second-year goalie Carlee Vance made 15 saves to hold the lead and beat Brock to extend their winning streak to four straight games.
 
The Blues are back in action at Varsity Arena on Saturday (Oct. 25) afternoon as they host the Ottawa Gee-Gees. Puck drop is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. with tickets available at varsityblues.ca/tickets. The game will also be streamed live on oua.tv.
