ANGERS LEADS BLUES TO CHAMPIONSHIP BERTH

Led by the shutdown pitching of fourth-year starting pitcher Kevin Angers, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues baseball team opened the OUA Championship tournament with a 15-4 win over the Queen's Gaels, securing a spot in tomorrow's gold medal game.

Angers delivered for the Blues in a crucial game, pitching six and two-third innings while allowing just five hits, two walks, and two earned runs. Angers kept the Gaels batters on their toes all game, throwing 107, 66 of them strikes, while striking out six. Outside of a first-inning double, all hits allowed were singles, minimizing the Gaels potential offensive impact.

This OUA semifinal matchup remained close throughout the first half of the game, until Toronto's offense triggered the mercy rule in the later innings, putting up five runs in the sixth inning and four in the seventh to pull away.

Owen Taylor, Jakob Cellupica, and Spenser Ross had three hits each. Cellupica and Carter Hercun led the way with three RBI apiece, and Ross driving in two. Sam Aslanowicz, Taylor, Kirk Gibson, Ben Mossburg, and Tyler Wingfield each recorded one run batted in. Taylor added a stolen base for good measure.

Patrick Stasyszyn entered the game in relief of Angers and recorded the final out of the game to send the Blues to the gold medal game, where they will face the winner of Waterloo vs. Brock on Saturday, October 12. First pitch for the OUA Championship game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
