After back-to-back games on the road, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team clinched a 3-2 win over the Carleton Ravens on Wednesday (Jan. 24) night at Varsity Arena.
Â
The Blues came ready for action and got off to a hot start with first-year forward Julian Recine securing the first goal of the game in under 30 seconds. After a quick dump in of the puck, second-year forward Jacob King drove in on a hard forecheck forcing a turnover behind the Ravens net which allowed third-year forward Owen Robinson the opportunity to send a quick pass to Recine who potted his fifth goal of the season. The Blues defence would then showcase their skills through the remainder of the period, limiting the visitors to just three shots on goal through the opening 20 minutes.
Â
Taking advantage of a fast start in the second period, King delivered a perfectly place wrist-shot into the top corner during a two-on-one break, scoring his eighth goal of the season just under the five minute mark. Carleton would wake from their sluggish play after falling behind by the two goal deficit, but Blues starting goaltender Rayce Ramsay would continue to shut the door throughout the second period. Ramsay registered 21 total saves earning a second win in three appearances for the Blues this seas
Â
The third period was met with back-and-forth scoring from both sides. Carleton centre Alex Johnston scored the Ravens first goal of the game, drawing within one. However, Toronto found a response on the power play as second-year forward Nicholas Wong tipped in a shot from third-year forward Billy Moskal, restoring the Blues two-goal lead. Carleton forward Reese Belton would add one more for the Ravens late, but the Blues held on to secure their 14th win of the season.
Prior to the start of the game, the Blues also welcomed family members of the late David "Red" Stephen. An outstanding forward and defensemen, "Red" Stephen represented U of T as a member of the Hockey Blues for a record of eight consecutive seasons, between 1951-52 through 1958-59. He was awarded eight First Colours, and served as captain of the team for a record of four times between 1953-54 and 1956-57, including the three consecutive championship teams in 1954-55, 1955-56 and 1956-57. His family members Gord, Jessica, Samantha, and Suzanne were on hand to deliver the ceremonial puck drop.
As the postseason draw closer with just four games remaining in the OUA regular season, Toronto currently sits second place in the OUA West just ahead of the TMU Bold.
