The No. 6 nationally-ranked Varsity Blues women's hockey team picked up their fifth straight win beating the TMU Bold 6-0 on Friday (Jan. 19) night at Varsity Arena.
The Blues offence was clicking all night outshooting the Bold 19-3 in the first period, before getting on the scoreboard twice in the first five minutes of the second period. Captain Taylor Trussler got the Blues first goal, finishing off a cross ice pass from third-year defender Olivia Hilton for Trussler's eighth goal of the season. Shortly after Trussler opened the scoring, Sophie Grawbarger won a puck battle along the boards and skated unguarded into the Bold's zone before firing a shot top shelf to double the Blues lead.
Later in the second, third-year forward Emma Irwin won an offensive zone faceoff back to fifth-year defender Caroline Eagles. Her point shot made its way through traffic and into the back of the net to extend the lead. With 71 seconds left in the period, Grawbarger sprung a pass to first-year forward Ashley Delahey who dropped the puck back to her twin sister Taylor Delahey who beat TMU goaltender Lauren Griffin to cap off a four goal period for the Blues.
Toronto kept their foot on the gas in the third period. Delahey added her second goal of the night in the early stages of the third, dancing her way through the TMU defence before her backhand found its way into the net. Third-year defender Francesca Monte added another insurance goal in the third period as her point shot found its way to the net for her first goal of the season.
Fifth-year goaltender Erica Fryer picked up her sixth shutout of the season making nine saves in the victory.
The Blues and Bold will meet again Saturday (Jan. 20) afternoon at the Mattamy Athletic Centre. Puck drop is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. and the game will be streamed live on
