The Varsity Blues women's hockey team lost 8-3 to the Cornell Big Red on Sunday (Sept. 24) afternoon.
Both teams traded punches early on with Cornell getting the icebreaker scoring just over two minutes into the game. Third-year forward Katy McKenna responded quickly for the Blues after burying second-year forward Kaitlyn McKnight's pass from behind the net.
Cornell added three more first period goals to give them a 4-1 lead before third-year defender Francesca Monte snuck behind the Big Red's defence on the powerplay to cut Toronto's deficit.
Cornell's offence struck early in the second period with forward Izzy Daniel setting up Lily Delianedis for one of Cornell's three goals in the second period. Daniel and Delianedis along with second-year forward McKenna Van Gelder led the Big Red in scoring with three points each in the game.
Blues captain Taylor Trussler scored late in the third period to cut the lead to 8-3 before the final buzzer sounded.
First-year goaltender Carlie Vance made 26 saves for the Blues this afternoon.
