The University of Toronto Varsity Blues football team fell 46-7 versus the Carleton Ravens in Ottawa on Saturday (Sept. 23) afternoon.
Despite the disappointing scoreline, the Blues defence and special teams did provide U of T with some momentum changing opportunities throughout the four quarters of action in the nation's capital.
In total, Toronto's defence produced one interception, recovered two fumbles, and took down the Ravens quarterback for a sack.
Highly touted first-year defensive back Devon Crenshaw came up with his first career interception late in the third quarter taking advantage of a tipped pass, adding a 46-yard return to help setup an eventual one-yard rushing touchdown from veteran running back Adam Williams. Making his first start at corner for the Blues in the game, Crenshaw would also add three pass breakups and four tackles to his stat line.
Toronto's defence was once again led by leading tackler Ryan Stewart, who finished the game with four solo tackles and five assisted tackles, along with one pass breakup. Stewart currently ranks third in the entire province averaging 7.2 total tackles per game.
Fourth-year defensive lineman Keenan Dell and third-year defensive tackle Jack Marsland combined for the Blues sack, with Dell also recording five total tackles, including an additional tackle for loss.
On special teams, U of T was ready to gamble early as they converted a first quarter fake punt, with Charlie McMillan finding a wide-open Nigel LeGood for an early first down. LeGood would finish the day as the Blues leading receiver, recording three receptions for 23 yards. The Toronto punt team also secured a fumble recovery mid-way through the second quarter after a botched return attempt by the Ravens.
However, Toronto's offence never found their footing to answer Carleton's scoring, as the Ravens continuously sent pressure at quarterbacks Kinsale Philip and Scott Barnett. Carleton finished the afternoon with eight total sacks, adding one interception and three fumble recoveries, halting any forward movement for the Blues.
U of T will look to regroup ahead of next Saturday, Sept. 30 when they are back on home turf at Varsity Stadium. Welcoming the McMaster Marauders to Toronto, action will kick-off at 1 p.m. Tickets for the Blues home game can be purchased at
