The No. 2 nationally-ranked Varsity Blues women's hockey team swept the TMU Bold in the OUA quarter-finals with a 4-2 win in Game 2 on Saturday (Feb. 25) afternoon at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.
This victory marks the fourth straight year the Blues will head to the OUA semifinal, where they will face off against the winner of Guelph/Windsor. The best-of-three series is set to take place from Mar. 1 to Mar. 5.
WHAT HAPPENED:Â The offence was buzzing for the Blues and Bold in the first period. Caroline Eagles opened the scoring for the Blues five minutes into the first period with a floating shot from the point. TMU scored a goal of their own from Payton Kerr three minutes later. But U of T came pushing back with third-year forward Lauren MacDonnell grabbing a goal to regain the lead.
In the second period, the Blues and Bold traded chances throughout the period, with Blues goalie Madeline Albert and Bold goalie Lauren Griffin holding down the fort. In the final 15 seconds of the period, Brooklyn Gemmill tied up the game for the Bold.Â
For the second game in a row, it all came down to the third period. With five minutes to go, Emma Potter's shot from the point just snuck past Griffin to put the Blues in the lead. Rookie forward Kaitlyn McKnight sealed the victory for the Blues with an empty net goal.
Albert finished the game with 22 saves in the win.
