Playing in front of more than 4000 fans, the Toronto Varsity Blues (1-1) gave them plenty of reasons to be excited on Sunday (Sept. 4), rolling to a 28-13 victory over the visiting Carleton Ravens (1-1).
Behind the arm, and legs, of quarterback Kinsale Philip, as well as the legs of Adam Williams and the entire Blues defence, Toronto proved to be too much in their home opener.
Led by a rushing attack that amounted 353 yards, the Blues were able to move their way up and down the field with plenty of success. However, despite their strong play, a pair of turnovers, meant the Blues would head into the halftime break leading only 1-0.
Although only up by a single point, Toronto had out-gained Carleton 289 yards to 32, and had 17 first downs compared to the Raven's two.
As the second half got underway though, suddenly scoring came fast and furious.
After the Ravens took their first lead of the game on a Kaseem Ferdinand touchdown catch, the Blues quickly responded, scoring their first major when Philip connected with Nigel LeGood on a 40-yard pass.
With 4:08 to play in the third, Carleton would go up 10-8 with a field goal but the lead was once again short-lived. Capping off a four-play 75-yard drive, Luka Stoikos took off down the right sideline and scampered into the end zone for a 56-yard touchdown run. Then, less than a minute into the final quarter, the Blues would open up the first two-possession lead of the game on a one-yard Kinsale Philip touchdown sneak.
Carleton would again kick another field goal to pull within nine, but then the Blues began to pull away. With 7:52 left to play, Sam Henke converted a 30-yard field goal attempt, before icing the game with a 27-yard field goal in the final minutes.
Leading the offense, Philip finished the contest 13 for 24 with 213 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing the ball 10 times for 66 yards and another major. Fourth-year running back, Adam Williams led the charge on the ground with 149 yards on 19 carries. Nigel LeGood was the leading receiver for Toronto on Sunday, hauling in three passes for 95 yards and a touchdown.
On defence, the Blues used a complete team effort to stymie the Ravens. Larauche Akaffou led the team with six tackles, while he, and Jackson Mayer both recorded half of a sack. In the secondary, Ryan Collins recorded an interception, and a tackle for loss.
Up next, the Blues will return to Varsity Stadium on Saturday, September 10 to play host to the Laurier Golden Hawks. Kick off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased
