BLUES STYMIED BY WARRIORS DESPITE 43 SHOT EFFORT

Despite a strong push to close out their regular season, the Varsity Blues 2021-22 campaign came to an end Thursday night at Varsity Arena. Hosting the Waterloo Warriors in their OUA West quarterfinal match-up, the Blues were able to control much of the game but ultimately fell 4-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Getting out of the blocks quickly, the Blues were able to jump out in front first. With the contest just over six minutes old, first-year commerce major Cole Purboo charged into the offensive zone before snapping a shot past Waterloo goalie Dan Murphy. Having taken the lead, the Blues continued to control the period outshooting the Warriors 10 to five, but were unable to add to their advantage prior to the first intermission.

Throughout the middle frame, the Blues continued to control most of the chances, however, it was Waterloo who was able to capitalize. Although Toronto out-shot the Warriors 18 to seven in the period, goals from Nolan Lee and Chase Campbell less than two minutes apart meant it was the visitors holding a 2-1 lead after two.

Doing everything they possibly could to keep their season alive in the third period, the Blues put absolutely everything on net. Propelling another 15 shots at Murphy, the Blues continued to pressure Waterloo, but were unable to find the equalizer. Instead, an early period goal from Gavin Wood and an empty-netter from Jacob Cascagnette rounded out a 4-1 Waterloo win.

In goal for Toronto, Alex Bishop stopped 12 of the 15 shots he faced, while Murphy, who served a crucial role in Waterloo's victory, made 42 saves on 43 shots.

The Warriors will now move on to visit the Rams on Saturday, March 19 in the OUA West semifinals.
