BLUES TAKE DOWN THE LIONS

The Toronto Varsity Blues snapped their four-game losing streak, defeating the York Lions 3-2 in Tuesday night action.

HOW IT HAPPENED: In the first, the York Lions were able to grab the lead off a David D'Agostino goal with 8:07 left. In the last minute of the first period, the Blues provided some excitement for the home crowd as they scored two goals in 10 seconds. On the powerplay, Owen Robinson would put away a pass from Danny Katic to tie up the contest. Rookie Billy Moskal would deke out a York defender before wristing the puck past the glove of York goalie Dalton Ewing for the 2-1 advantage.

Early in the second, the Blues looked they were continuing their momentum as it appeared they got their third goal. However, goalie interference was called and Danny Katic was sent to the penalty box. The same thing would happen to the York Lions with 8:18 remaining, as a goal from the Lions was waved off due to a high stick. Despite all the high action, the two teams would not find the scoreboard in the frame. After the two periods, Toronto still held the 2-1 lead.

Second-year forward Kyle Potts scored his tenth of the season to put the Blues up 3-1 at the 6:24 mark. Toronto's penalty woes caught up to them in the third as Lucas Breault scored to get the Lions within one with four minutes left in the game. York was putting on a furious comeback towards the end of the game, sending out the extra attacker. With less than twenty seconds left, another goal from Toronto was waved off because the puck was kicked into the empty net. The Blues were able to hold on for the win, despite giving up three penalties in the third.

Goaltender Alex Bishop made 26 saves to get his fifth win of the year.

UP NEXT: Toronto is back at home on Thursday, Mar 3 to take on the Lakehead Thunderwolves. The Blues are 3-1 in the season series against the Thunder Bay squad. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m.
