Box Score Despite having not played an OUA contest in over two months, the Toronto Varsity Blues offence did not miss a beat Friday night en route to a 9-3 win over the Lakehead Thunderwolves.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:Â It didn't take long before the Thunderwolves were able to jump out in front, taking advantage of some early Toronto penalty trouble. Scoring two goals, both coming on the power-play, just under four minutes apart, Lakehead found themselves up 2-0 approaching the midway point of the opening frame.
Fortunately for the Blues, they were awarded their first power-play of the game less than 30-seconds after the Thunderwolves second goal. Just like the visitors, the Blues quickly took advantage when Billy Moskal jammed home a rebound. The Moskal goal seemed to open the flood gates for the Blues, as they went on a tear. The home side would go on to score three more goals before the opening period expired. Danny Katic, Owen Robinson and Nick Grima each found the back of the net as Toronto went from down two goals to up two goals in less than ten minutes of game time.
As the middle frame got underway, the Blues offence continued to roll. Crashing the crease on separate occasions, both Peyton Reeves and Ben Woodhouse would score on loose pucks sitting on top of the crease, giving Toronto six unanswered goals. Before the second period expired though, the Thunderwolves would put an end to the Varsity Blues goal streak, scoring with a little over six minutes to go in the frame.
Fending off any type of Lakehead comeback attempt in the third, the Blues held strong defensively, before tacking on three more goals late in the frame. First, it was Cole Purboo scooping up a loose puck and depositing it into the back of the net. Then, Woodhouse scored his second goal of the night when a funny bounce off the end-boards wound up on his stick in the slot. Finally, Steven Elliott would find the back of the net with 20 seconds to go in the contest to round out the scoring.
In goal for the Blues, Alex Bishop made 33 saves on 36 shots to earn the victory.
