Winning their third consecutive match, the No. 6 Varsity Blues took care of the Waterloo Warriors Saturday evening at the Goldring Centre 3-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED: Toronto came out flying to open the match behind kills from Hayden Cavender, Evan Falardeau and Martin Licht to establish an early 5-2 advantage. However, after Waterloo evened the score 6-6, neither side was able to gain much ground on the other. With no lead reaching more than two points during the middle stages of the set, it was Waterloo ultimately taking control late. Up 21-19, Waterloo went on to win four of the next five points to secure the set.
Looking to even the match in the second set, the Blues did exactly that. Once again, Toronto came out swinging and we able to establish an 8-4 lead. This time, Toronto was able to maintain that space between them and Waterloo throughout the set. Getting their lead as high as six on four different occasions, the Blues were able to cruise to a 25-19 win.
Wasting no time in the third set, the Blues established control quickly. Opening up the biggest lead at any point in the match, Toronto went up 11-3 over Waterloo. Despite efforts from the Warriors to bridge the gap, the Blues, at no point, allowed the visitors to get any closer than three points. Getting a pair of late kills from Jayden Talsma, Toronto was able to roll to a second consecutive 25-19 victory.
For much of the fourth-set, it appeared that a fifth was on the horizon. Although narrow, Waterloo was out in front for much of the set, leading to Toronto using both of their time-outs. However, following their second time-out, the Blues began to take the game to Waterloo. Although trailing 23-19, the Blues used their attack and scrappy defence to win six consecutive points, ending the match with a 25-23 win.
Falardeau's 14 kills and points led the Blues in both categories. Mitchell Neuert accounted for 13.5 points for Toronto. Freshman, Michael Hickey led the team in assists with 33, while Daniel Tudor had the team-high in digs with 17.
UP NEXT: The Blues will now shift their focus to the York Lions, who they will host on November 25.
