MANCHUREK LEADS BLUES TO OVERTIME VICTORY OVER LAKERS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey team defeated the Nipissing Lakers 6-5 (OT) in pre-season action on Saturday, October 24 at Varsity Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Lakers started with all the momentum scoring three straight goals in the first period. Gael Lubwele, Matt Franche and Colby Tower found the back of the net for Nipissing.

In the second period, Toronto stormed back scoring four straight with rookie forward Danny Katic netting two while Kyle Clarke and Joey Manchurek added one goal apiece. Nipissing would tie it up at the end of the second when sophomore forward Jacob Hickey scored.

The Blues would break the tie when Katic notched his third goal of the contest to get a hat trick and the 5-4 lead. Lakers forward Jacob Collins tied it up midway through the third sending the game to an extra period.

Manchurek scored his second goal of the game in overtime to send the Blues home with a hard-fought win.

Senior goalie Frederic Foulem stopped 18 of 23 shots faced for the victory.

UP NEXT: The Blues continue their exhibition schedule at home on Friday, October 29 as they take on the Carleton Ravens at Varsity Arena. Puck drop is at 5:00 p.m.
