University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey bench boss Vicky Sunohara earned 2019-20 OUA female coach of the year honours across all sports as announced on Wednesday morning.
Â
"It is quite an honour because there are so many amazing coaches across the OUA," said Sunohara. "I know because I coach against some of them. I'm super excited to be able to share this with my assistant coaches, team and entire Varsity Blues staff at the University of Toronto. I work with such an amazing group and I am so fortunate for that."
Â
In her ninth season as Varsity Blues head coach, Sunohara earned both OUA and U SPORTS coach of the year honours. She guided Toronto to their first OUA McCaw Cup championship title since 2002-03 this season. She is only the second U of T coach to earn the national honour after Karen Hughes in 2000-01.
Â
The two-time Olympic gold medalist helped the Blues to an OUA-best 17-4-1-2 record, which was their best record under her tenure.
Â
U of T boasted the top-ranked powerplay (20.2%), while ranking third in penalty killing (91.1%).
