Box Score The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's hockey closed out the 2019-20 regular season with a 3-2 loss against the Windsor Lancers on Saturday night (Feb 8) at Capri Pizzeria Recreation Complex.
Â
Despite the loss, Toronto finished atop the OUA West division with a record of 21-5-2 (W-L-OTL). The Blues will take on the eighth-seeded Western Mustangs in a best-of-three Round 1 OUA playoff series, starting on Wednesday night (Feb 12) at Varsity Arena.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: The Lancers got on the board early as Chays Ruddy buried a one timer. The Blues got into some penalty trouble throughout the remainder of the first but were able to kill them off to hold Windsor to one through 20 minutes.
Â
The Blues got an early chance on the powerplay in the second period. The Lancers were able to kill the penalty and follow-up the kill with a goal from Anthony Salintini. Toronto headed to the penalty box again, but managed to make the best out of it. Scott Kirton used his speed to breakout and score a shorthanded goal to cut the deficit in half. The league's best powerplay got another opportunity late in the period as the Lancers headed to the penalty box. Kevin Lavoie received a pass from Josh Hanson and sniped it high on Windsor goalie Jonathan Reinhart to even up the score.
Â
Plenty more penalties were given out in the final frame, with 86 minutes of penalties being handed out between both teams. Connor Matton restored the Lancers lead on one of the powerplay chances they received in the third. The Blues pulled their goalie in the final minutes to try and tie the game up, but could not get anything going.
