BLUES IN THE LEAD AFTER DAY 1 OF OUA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Results

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's and women's swimming teams reach the podium 20 times on Day 1 of the OUA championships (Feb. 6) at Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre in Scarborough, Ont.

TEAM STANDINGS: Toronto's men hold a 137-point lead with 337 points, ahead of the Waterloo Warriors (200) and McMaster Marauders (197). The Blues women accumulated 322 points on Day 1 and also sit in first place ahead of McMaster (234) and Western (196).

"It is very special that McMaster stepped up to run this championships at the beautiful Pan Am Games pool in Scarborough," said Varsity Blues head coach Byron MacDonald. "It's really made the meet even more special for the athletes."

MEN'S RESULTS: Cam Kidd, Graeme Goodman, Everett Smith and Ethan Fazekas kicked off Day 1 with an OUA record-breaking performance in the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:29.67.

Sophomore breaststroker Graeme Alyward won his first career OUA individual title, winning the 100-meter race in 1:01.40.

Rookie standout Bernard Godolphin touched the wall in 1:48.87 to win the 200 freestyle, while fellow first-year Varsity Blue Max Tambling picked up the silver medal in 1:50.30.

In an A final that featured six Varsity Blues, fifth-year veteran Osvald Nitski won the 100 butterfly in 53.90 seconds, bringing the number of OUA individual events that he has won in his career to five. Matthew Mac placed third in 55.59 seconds.

"Osvald's performance is impressive as he is on his engineering work term," said MacDonald. "He is working on cutting edge AI stuff at the prestigious Vector Institute, taking some classes and swimming all at the same time. It has been tough to get into shape and there were some real valleys this season but he has turned the corner just in time for our championship meets."

Rookie Tyler Wall, Aylward, Nitski and veteran Gael Chaubet capped off Day 1 with a first-place finish in the 400 medley relay in 3:40.41.

Rounding out the podium finishes were Wall (25.30) and third-year veteran Chris Ruus (25.80), who finished 2-3 in the men's 50 backstroke.

WOMEN'S RESULTS: After earning the 50 backstroke silver medal for the last three seasons, fourth-year veteran Rachel Rodé won the event in 27.05 seconds. Fellow veteran Sarah Polley finished second in 28.64 seconds.

"Rachel is graduating this year and she has been such a positive presence on our team," said MacDonald. "She will be sorely missed. She continues to decimate the field, winning by over a body length in a 30-second race is unheard of. Doing a best time in fourth year is also impressive."

Similarly, after placing second in both 2018 and 2019, Hannah Genich reclaimed her 2017 100 butterfly title, touching the wall in 58.18 seconds. Georgia Kidd earned the silver medal in 1:00.83.

"Hannah has not looked back since that bronze medal for Canada at the world student games last summer in Italy and she just keeps getting better," added MacDonald.

Rodé. Polley, Genich and Sidney Munro started the night with a decisive victory in the women's 200 freestyle relay in 1:42.54.

Sohpomore Aleksa Gold won her first career OUA individual title in the 200 freestyle in 1:58.07, with Kidd claiming the bronze medal in 1:59.93.

Gold, Abby McDonald, Kidd and Ainsley McMurray capped off the women's night with a victory in the women's 400 medley relay in 4:09.42.

A first-year breaststroker, McDonald placed second in her OUA debut, touching the wall in 1:09.96 in the 100-metre event. McDonald earned her second silver medal on the night in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:51.85. Kate Rendall finished third in 4:52.34.
