The No. 3 nationally-ranked University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's volleyball team defeated the York Lions 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-20) in their 2019-20 regular season final on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 23) at Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.

With the win, the Blues clinch first place in the OUA East division with a 17-2 record, having dropped an OUA-low 18 sets all season.

WHAT'S NEXT? As the No. 1 seed in the East, the Blues will host the Waterloo Warriors, who finished fourth in the West, in an OUA quarter-final match next Saturday, February 29 at 1 p.m. Should the Blues be victorious, Toronto would then host the OUA Final Four, March 6-7, at Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.

TORONTO STATS: Fifth-year right side hitter Alina Dormann had a monster performance in setting another career milestone. Dormann recorded her 1,500th point, racking up 22 points off of 19 kills, two aces and one block, while also adding 12 digs. Dormann leaves the Varsity Blues program as the all-time regular season kills (1,232) and points (1,513) leader.

Fellow fifth-year veteran Caleigh Cruickshank totaled 9.5 kills off of eight kills, one ace and an assisted block, while also leading all players with 14 digs.

Third-year middle Jenna Woock recorded 9.5 points off of five kills3.5 blocks and one ace. Second-year setter Hayley Goodwin tallied 34 assists in the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED: The Blues got out to a dominant 8-2 lead in the first set and did not look back. Toronto was up 16-6 at the technical timeout and, despite a late push from the Lions, took the 1-0 match lead, 25-16.

U of T continued to roll in the second set, building a 16-12 lead at the tech timeout. The Lions came out of the break on fire though, evening the set at 17-17. The Blues stayed calm though and back-to-back blocks from Alina Dormann and Jenna Woock regained the lead en route to a 25-20 win.

The third set started as a back-and-forth affair, all tied up at 7-7. The Blues took over from there, going on a 9-3 run to take a 16-10 lead into the technical timeout. The Lions battled back to even the set at 19-19, but U of T then showed great composure to close out the match on a 6-1 run, 25-20.
