WOMEN 2ND, MEN 3RD AT U SPORTS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Results

Aleksa Gold's gold-medal finish in the 200-metre backstroke highlighted Day 3 as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues swimming teams wrapped up the 2020 U SPORTS championships on Saturday night (Feb. 22) in Victoria.

TEAM STANDINGS: Toronto's women accumulated 978.5 points, good for second place. The UBC Thunderbirds finished first (1092.5), while the Calgary Dinos were third (864).

The Blues men placed third overall with 765 points behind UBC (1087) and Calgary (873).

"It was a great finish to a real good season," said Varsity Blues head coach Byron MacDonald. "We held our predicted finishes, which isn't always easy to do. The women were second, which is quite impressive when you realize they lost two superstars from last year in Kylie Masse and Rebecca Smith, who is sitting out a year for Olympic preparations. The men's squad held off a fast-rising McGill squad for third and just ran out of swims to catch Calgary for second."

WOMEN'S RESULTS: Gold, who is vying for a spot on the Estonian Olympic team this summer, won her first career U SPORTS title, touching the wall first in the 200 backstroke in 2:13.62. Fourth-year veteran Sarah Polley placed fifth in 2:18.39.

Less than 20 minutes later, Gold jumped back in the pool and claimed the silver medal in the women's 100 freestyle in 56.35 seconds. Fellow second-year swimmer Ainsley McMurray earned the bronze medal in 56.58.

"That's an incredible double, two huge races within about ten minutes," added MacDonald. "And then, helped the relay to the podium half an hour later. Aleksa has always been in the background to some bigger names, butno longer!"

Fourth-year veteran Hannah Genich earned her fourth individual medal of the meet, finishing third in the women's 200 IM in 2:16.98. Georgia Kidd was fifth in 2:19.49.

"Hannah Genich winning four medals is a testament to hard work and perseverance," said MacDonald. "Hannnah had a hard time finding consistency in her first two years but now has become one of the top university swimmers in the country."

Gold, rookie Abby McDonald, Genich and McMurray then teamed up to finish second in the women's 400 medley realy in 4:10.63.

MEN'S RESULTS: Tyler Wall, Graeme Aylward, Osvald Nitski and Cam Kidd capped off the three-day meet with a second-place finish in the men's 400 medley relay in 3:45.97.

Kidd also finished fifth in the men's 100 freestyle in 51.53 seconds, while Bjoren-Ole Schrader was eighth in 52.60 seconds.

"Cam's value to the team can't be underestimated," said MacDonald. "This year he has been a leader not just in the pool but also outside the pool. His renewed commitment to training over the summer led to these great swims this year."

Aylward (29.19) and Kidd (31.26) finished sixth and eighth, respectively, in the 50-metre breaststroke, while Nitski placed eighth in the 200 IM in 2:12.72.

"Graeme was a top recruit out of high school but had what might be called an average rookie season," said MacDonald. "But his jump to the podium at this year's national championships shows those days are in the past. It shows what hard work and belief in yourself can accomplish."

"The rookie duo of Max Tambling and Bernard Godolphin were superb in the first season with the Blues. Both guys swam to spots in the finals here and had numerous best times and breakthroughs. They are key men for our move to even higher goals for the team."
